A sensory garden for tiny children – The Cedar School ‘Early Years’ Garden

An exciting project for us – following on from the sensory garden for the juniors at this wonderful school, a garden for the youngest children. With varying levels of disability and so vastly differing needs, this garden proved one of the biggest challenges yet; the space was small and the teachers’ wish list was HUGE!

Sauterelle extended the garden outwards and took a little bit of the adjoining land to create some real outdoor classroom space. The garden is called ‘The Journey’ as we wanted to create a real sense of energy, movement and flow to stimulate the children, and the teachers to help the children really explore every inch of the garden. The Journey takes the children along rivers, through the desert, under tree canopies, through woodland, into a tropical jungle, all the time passing beds of varying heights, packed with plants to provide smell, touch, sight and sound stimulation.

The garden is a true outdoor classroom with tantalising learning opportunities around every corner – a window set into a raise bed provides views of wiggly worms, piles of logs are home to numerous creepy crawly bugs, a hanging frame is used to dangle pots and pans and musical items, a covered log shelter provides endless story time fun and a water feature creates a gurgling sense of peace.
