Garden moments - a selection of our favourite bits and pieces

A SMALL WILDLIFE POND

This little project was a delight – a wildlife pond to attract frogs, insects and dragonflies, set in a lovely mature garden. A gently trickling water feature will soon be added.

A SMALL CONTEMPORARY GARDEN

This garden was designed for a property developer to create a contemporary outdoor living space for chic city living. Designed to provide two levels, the upper level flowed seamlessly from the well designed yet compact interior. A raised seating wall provides impromptu seating and the lovely decked area compliments the beautiful grey granite of the lower, second entertaining space. Subtle lighting and a simple palette of plants complete the simple but bold effect.

A CONTEMPORARY COUNTRY GARDEN WITH FIREPIT/INBUILT BBQ

Although set in the heart of the Hampshire downs, the clients of this lovely cottage had decided to rebuild an old fashion conservatory into a contemporary open plan living area and sought something a little different to match their individual style. The garden was designed to create a feeling of an extended living area, leading the eye into the pretty flint walled garden and to the stunning countryside beyond. A firepit – BBQ space was added with seating walls, using a palette of materials to compliment the house and new interior yet to work perfectly with the beautiful flint. A selection of unusual and striking perennials mixed with low maintenance shrubs was chosen to compliment the design and to allow the flint to shine through.

A BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY GARDEN WITH CHALLENGING LEVELS

This stunning house set on a farm estate rolling across many acres, with beautiful views, presented an interesting challenge as the house was set on a very large lateral slope! We decided to make the most of the slope to enhance the views and so created 3 different levels with elegant steps connecting them in unity, and a long lavender and allium walkway leading into what will become the orchard and kitchen garden. The planting was lush, using a balance of traditional cottage garden plants with some interesting perennials thrown in to create rhythm and all year round colour.

A SMALL TOWN GARDEN WITH A CONVERTED STABLE STUDIO

When we saw this garden for the first time we were charmed by the delightful recently renovated stable studio at the end of the garden. However during the renovation process the York stone paving had been damaged and the little studio, whilst very pretty, really dominated the space. The planting in the garden was pretty and well maintained but the beds had crept into the garden and the lawn had lost its shape. We spotted in one corner a lovely old brick trough which had seen better days. This was a case of being brought in for a planting plan, yet deciding the garden and studio really needed reconnecting, so we designed a delightful seating area using reclaimed cast iron pillars which in time will be covered by roses, thus softening the studio and making it feel a part of the garden rather than a sore thumb. The old trough has become a lovely water feature and the Yorkstone paving has been restored to its full glory.

A LARGE COUNTRY GARDEN FOR AN OLD PARSONAGE

This garden had an old listed cob wall right in the middle of it which felt completely disconnected from the rest of the garden. By completely changing the layout of the garden and building a small low seating wall around the paved terrace in the same style as the cob wall, we managed to reconnect the whole garden so that it flowed beautifully.

A COUNTRY GARDEN OVER THREE LEVELS

This lovely large garden was so cluttered that it felt small, dark and dank. It sloped quite steeply away from the house into woodland and was not very practical. We created three flat, useable areas, connected with lovely contemporary planting and created a decked area cantilevered over a small wildlife pond. The resulting garden was an incredible transformation!
